Kundiman is in search of a Programs & Communications Associate or Manager who is self-directed, takes initiative, and is able to work collaboratively, as well as independently. This position reports to the Kundiman Executive Director. 

Kundiman is an organization that is dedicated to the creation and cultivation of Asian American literature. Kundiman offers a comprehensive spectrum of arts programming that gives writers opportunities to inscribe their own stories, transforming and enriching the American literary landscape. Kundiman sees literature not only as vehicle for cultural expression but also as an instrument for political dialogue and self-empowerment.

  • Plan, coordinate, and implement Kundiman readings, workshops, Poetry Prize, Retreat, and Kavad projects.

    • Correspond with co-sponsors and event collaborators.

    • Archive all Kundiman event documentation both in NYC and Regional locations.

    • Photograph every event; count attendance and circulate email signups.

    • Schedule honoraria for writers.

    • Schedule travel and accommodations for writers, as needed.

    • Write grant reports, as needed.

  • Apply for Poets & Writers grant funding, and draft program-specific language for other grants.

  • Assist with tabling and organizing readings at annual conferences and festivals, including AWP, AAAS, and Brooklyn Book Festival.

  • Facilitate special fellowships and opportunities for Kundiman fellows (VSC, Palm Beach Poetry, etc.)

  • Work with interns to plan and coordinate events.


  • Devise and implement publicity strategy for Kundiman activities in earned press outlets (such as TimeOut, Village Voice).

  • Write press releases.

  • Create and schedule weekly or bi-weekly e-blasts.

  • Manage Kundiman’s Twitter, Facebook, and other social media.

  • Update the Kundiman website (Events, Kudos, Publications, Announcements, etc).

  • Draft copy for readings, events, or official announcement for Kundiman, as needed.

  • Let fellows know about opportunities on Openspace, the Kundiman Fellows email group.


  • Attend and assist at donor events, as needed.

  • Check mailbox.

  • Deposit checks into bank account.

  • Put items into storage and or ship them, as needed.

  • Attend quarterly Board Meetings and take notes.

Skills Required

  • At least two years of experience in arts programming and communications. Nonprofit experience a plus.

  • Highly organized with attention to detail, and the ability to be a self-starter and to manage multiple projects.

  • Exceptional writing ability, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Must live within commuting distance of metropolitan New York.

  • Commitment to the arts and Asian American community.

This is a part-time consultant position with partial health benefits. Pay and title commensurate with experience.

Commitment: 30 hours/week
